Hanging Out

With most of our fun summer activities behind us, and a few more fun things ahead of us, we are literally just hanging around this week. I caught the boys finding their own way to have fun in these not-very-exciting-days.

Kaleb's been wanting to go bowling all summer, so we finally found the time to do that with Daddy on Tuesday evening. We had fun, although at the risk of our very lives! Braylen has yet to learn that the bowling ball must go down the lane, not behind him towards the spectators! Kaleb loves to take a running start, come to a screeching halt at the line, and toss his ball in a zig-zag pattern down the lane. Thank heavens for gutter rails. Aaron uses the ramp and lets his ball roll smoothly down the lane. Ahhhhh. Derek and I had embarassingly low scores. My bowling-league brother would be ashamed. ;) But we all had fun, and Kaleb smiled the whole time.

A few funnies and then I will close for today. Yesterday at Walmart while I studied different types of razor blades, Kaleb came to me and said he got something for me. I said, "okay" without looking, not really paying attention to him. He kept saying it over and over, and when I finally looked at him, he was holding up high the hugest box of maxi pads I'd ever seen. I ignored all questions from the boys about what those are and what those are for--that is for another day. While helping Aaron with his pajamas last night, I must have leaned forward a bit too much, because Aaron pointed to my chest and said, "What's that? A buttcrack?" Ha!

A Boy and His Dog

We knew today would eventually come. We weren't looking forward to it, but we knew that when Shawn left, Dakota would have to leave too. Shawn stayed with us for 3 weeks, and we "raised" Dakota for 16 days. When 3 young boys (and their parents) care for a puppy that long, goodbyes are hard. Braylen especially loved playing with her. He walked her and played games with her frequently. Tonight when I watered my flowers I found her fetch stick. I missed her chasing after the hose as I dragged it around. In those moments I realized that I might be the one missing her the most. Derek found me missing her and I told him we need a dog of our own--soon!Derek took the boys out in the rowboat Saturday. He discovered that Braylen will give his passengers a tour of every shore, while Kaleb will pretty much row in a straight line down the channel. I witnessed this for myself last night. How fun it was to be in a rowboat and see fish, turtles, and ducks swimming all around us. The bugs weren't even out, which was amazing.
Kaleb and Aaron frequently mimic WALL-E, from Pixar's new movie. Derek and I get a kick out of their robot voices. They were amazed when I told them I have an Uncle Wally. :) I reassured them that he doesn't resemble WALL-E in any way!
This morning Braylen played "Super-Aaron" and "Super-Kaleb" with his brothers. This game was started by Derek when Braylen was itty-bitty. After they were done Aaron showed off the jammies he happened to be wearing. :)

Splash Bash

Yesterday Braylen and Kaleb lived it up at day camp--paddle boating, crafts, obstacle course, swimming, water slide, hayrack ride, etc... I hung out all day and visited with a friend who also had kids at this camp. Besides being hot, we had a great time!
Today was the party for our school's summer reading program. B and K had to read so many books and take quizzes on them to qualify for this swimming party. How great to finally enjoy the fruits of their labor. Braylen went off the high dive for the first time today. Kaleb went off the low dive for the first time today. They both loved those diving boards! Aaron was brave enough at the pool this afternoon to walk up the waterslide steps all by himself and go down the slide while I waited in the pool! Tonight he and I explored the rock garden and by the time all 3 boys went to bed they were VERY worn out.I'm trying to remember some funny things the kids have said or done lately, but I'm finding that hard to do in the summertime. When we were driving to church Sunday morning, Aaron said he was glad we were going to the pool. I have no idea how he thought of that--we were dressed for church, not swimming!

Steamy Summer Days

Tonight for supper the boys and I enjoyed farm fresh sweet corn as our main dish! Derek's at a conference and missed out on some yummy corn. I took this picture of our corn feast. Our backyard pool was a lifesaver on such a hot and humid day. All 3 boys spent plenty of time in the water. Now that Aaron's completed 2 weeks of swimming lessons he's much braver in the water. He dunks himself completely underwater and is mighty proud of that.

Dakota's growing and changing every day. Her ears no longer flop over, which is the biggest change I see. We still love having her here. Since it's so hot and humid, we've been bringing her inside from time to time--in a doggy kennel of course. I do not want German Shepherd hair all over my house. Not to mention other things...
I feel like we are cruising right along through summer. Half of our school's kids start school this Thursday. Our boys are not on that schedule, so we still have a few more weeks of summer vacation. I'm glad for that! I'm not quite ready to give up my sleepy mornings and open days.
