A Boy and a Frog

We recently spent a day at the lake. I know, a shocker, right? :) Our town has a huge event every summer, and lots of police officers are needed to keep the peace. To put it mildly, my officer doesn't like all the trouble this event brings with it. So we got out of town before he needed to work it.

On our way to the lake, we saw a storm to the east. It made for a pretty scene, especially with the rainbow.

At the cabin, I fixed a simple supper while the rest of my family played outside. Aaron found me in the kitchen and said, "I found a frog!" I turned toward him and saw a giant toad squished tightly in his grip. Oh! He brought it inside! We found a mason jar and poked holes in foil for the lid. Next step? He needed some living bugs for his toad to eat. How convenient--I remembered seeing a bug earlier, and I hadn't gotten around to squishing it yet. Aaron put it in the jar with the toad. If only Aaron would remain this easy to please. :) He carried it around all evening, begging us to let him keep it in the camper for the night.

After a while, Aaron had a new idea: set up the bug zapper, place the frog nearby, and let it catch the bugs drawn to the zapper! He was persistent--another shocker, right? :) I set it up for him, Grandma helped him catch more living bugs, and Aaron was SO happy!

His frog got so excited with the bug feast, he jumped through the foil lid! Aaron caught him and moved him into a new "home." At bedtime he liberated his frog beneath the bug zapper. Here we are, one week later, and Aaron says yesterday, "I'm glad I let my frog go free, Mommy." Me too, Aaron. Although I'll never look at that bug zapper the same way again. It will always remind me of a very special boy and his frog.
